FAQ

QUESTIONS WE GET ASKED.

If yours is not here, send it to us. We add the ones that come up more than once.

THE BASICS

What is grooming, exactly?

It is the deliberate process of building a relationship with a young person in order to lower their defenses, separate them from other trusted adults, and make future exploitation possible. It is relational rather than forceful, and by design most of it happens before anything a court would call a crime.

How is this different from talking about human trafficking?

Trafficking is where the public conversation usually starts. Grooming is what comes first, and it is the part that is actually preventable. We work at the beginning of the story rather than the end.

Is my community really at risk?

Grooming occurs in every income bracket, neighborhood and faith community. Affluence and stability change the setting, not the risk. What changes outcomes is whether the adults nearby know the pattern.

Will talking about this frighten my child?

Age-appropriate conversation reliably does the opposite. Children who have language for boundaries and secrets are harder to isolate. Fear comes from a single alarming talk; confidence comes from many ordinary ones.

SPEAKING + TRAINING

How long is a session?

Formats run from a 45-minute keynote to a half-day working session. We recommend a length once we know the audience and what you want them able to do afterward.

Do you travel, and what does it cost?

Fees depend on format, travel and the number of sessions. Send an inquiry with your date and location and we will give you accurate information rather than a range that may not apply.

Is the content appropriate for students?

Our sessions are built for the adults around young people. Student-facing content is developed separately, always in coordination with your leadership and your own policies.

Can you present remotely?

Yes. Live remote works well for staff and volunteer training. Parent nights and congregation-wide messages generally land better in person.

THE BOOK + WORKBOOK

Where can I buy Breaking the Code of Grooming?

It is available on Amazon in Kindle and paperback. The Book page has the details and the purchase link.

Is the workbook free?

Yes. The companion workbook is a free PDF you can download, print and photocopy for your family, small group or staff.

Can we order books in quantity?

Yes. Pricing is quoted per request based on quantity, timing and shipping. The bulk orders page lists what to include and we will follow up with real numbers.

Can someone underwrite books for our school or church?

Sometimes. Some organizations have their copies funded by a local business or donor. Ask us when you submit a bulk request and we will tell you what is available.

Is the book appropriate for teenagers to read?

It is written for adults, but many families have read sections with older teenagers. Read it first and decide what fits your child.

RESOURCES

Do I have to sign up to use the resources?

No. Every article and guide on this site is free and requires no email address, account or registration.

Can I share or reprint your material?

For non-commercial education, yes. Please keep the attribution so families can find the rest of the resources. For anything broader, ask us first.

Are you developing curriculum?

Yes. Curriculum, recorded training and additional workbooks are in development. Anything not yet available is labeled that way on the site.

THE ORGANIZATION

Are you a nonprofit?

Yes. Share the Signal became a 501(c)(3) organization in 2022.

Who runs Share the Signal?

Founder Don Meredith, along with co-founders Shawn Barrieau and Jessica Holland, and treasurer Brenda Meredith. The About page has more on the team and how the organization started.

Where do donations go?

Education, resource development, awareness and the ongoing prevention work that lets a small organization reach more schools, churches and families. We do not publish per-dollar impact claims unless they are backed by verified financial data.

Can our organization partner with you?

We work with churches, schools, clubs and businesses as host, distribution, program and underwriting partners. The Partners page has the detail and what to include in an application.

IF YOU ARE WORRIED RIGHT NOW

I think something is happening. What do I do first?

Write down what you have observed, with dates, in plain factual language. Reduce the private access without staging a confrontation. Tell one other adult who can act. Then report through the proper channel: your school, organization, or your state child protective services. If a child is in immediate danger, contact local law enforcement first.

Should I confront the adult?

No. A confrontation gives them warning, a chance to shape the account, and an opportunity to pressure the child. It also tends to make the child stop talking.

What if I am wrong?

Documenting an observation and reporting a concern does no harm if you are mistaken. Saying nothing is the only choice that can only make things worse.

My concern is about a colleague. How do I raise it?

Report the behavior you observed, in writing, not a verdict about the person. Follow your organization’s policy, and if it goes nowhere, escalate to the district or to child protective services. Raising a concern is not disloyalty.

Do you investigate cases?

No. We are an education and prevention organization, not an investigative or law enforcement body. We can help you understand what you are seeing and point you toward the right reporting route.

STILL HAVE A QUESTION?

Ask us directly. If a child is in immediate danger, contact local law enforcement first.
